Positive/Negative Memory Submodalities Experiment Project - Draft

The mission in priority order:

1) To develop a statistical model for how positive and negative memories are coded in client’s submodalities and deliver a quantitative analysis on the effect that modifying these representations have on the clients experience of these memories.

2) To demonstrate NLP R&R efforts in furthering the study of NLP

3) To determine will there be a difference, the extend and direction from the use of the experiment

4) Test the lability of emotional memory (Are there or are there not permanant changes after a submodalities manipulation) - This is not a focus of this particular experiement, however we will collect data to enable further investigation.

At the close of this experiment we expect the following:

1) To have 95% confidence (+- 5% requires 383 people) (99% requires 661 people) data on the typical submodalities used to experience positive and negative experiences

2) To have 95% confidence (+- 5% requires 383 people) (99% requires 661 people)confidence data on what changes will typically increases the positive and decreases the negative experience of memories

3) To have 95% confidence (+- 5% requires 383 people) (99% requires 661 people)confidence on the impact(How confident are you in this change, did you know you can do this) of these procedures. Did you know you could do it?

4) To have 95% confidence (+- 5% requires 383 people) (99% requires 661 people)Did this happen quicker than you though change could happen. Did you know it could this quickly.

5) To have 95% confidence (+- 5% requires 383 people) (99% requires 661 people)confidence in their ability create the change in this spicific quality of experience. Are you confident that you can do this again?

6) To have 95% confidence (+- 5% requires 383 people) (99% requires 661 people) confidence in the permanant impact of this change. This is something we are collecting data on for future use.

This experiment will be viewed as a success if:

Over 1000 people use it, including: These question to be asked at the end of experiement. Included in other background

-300 Novices

-300 Who have read less than 3 NLP books

-100 Who have read more than 3 NLP books

-200 NLP Practitioners

-100 NLP Master Practitioners or greater

Bias - For or against NLP
COMMENT SW: should we also ask in the NLP experience about attending workshops (i.e., haven’t read books) and also about NLP under other names (i.e., attended or read Tony Robbins)?

Assumptions:

1) A user will only count once and no matter how often they pass through the system, their first completed experiment will be the only one tracted.

Data to be collected:

Pre Experiment:

1) Name

2) NLP Experience

3) Sex

4) Hand Orientation

5) Belief in ability to change the impact of their memories (Scale from 1 - 10 with 1 being low)

6) Positive and Negative experience description

7) The level of intensity of each of these memories (Scale from 1 - 10 with 1 being low)

COMMENT SW: Should we also ask about Belief in NLP technique ability to change the impact of their memories? Question 5 gets at positive expectation for memory change in general and my suggested question would drill down a bit more about positive expectations for NLP ability to change memories.

During Experiment:

1) Path through experiment

2) Submodalities chosen prior to change

3) Optimal submodalities

4) Time on each page

Post Experiment:

1) New level of intensity for each of the memories

2) New level of belief in ability to change the impact of memories

3) Interest in learning more about NLP

Decision points:

Video

- Have the full video in second life?

- Have a real life narrator that can talk through SecondLife animation?

- Offer choice of Avatars or moderators.

Experiment Page Flow:

1) Introduction to NLP R&R and Submodalities Experiment - Video description, text to include usage guidelines - goto 2

2) Data Gather Page 1 - Video description, question user for Name, NLP Experience, Sex Hand Orientation, belief in ability to change impact of memories - goto page 3

3) Data Gather Page 2 - Video description, question user for negative and positive experience description and the level of intensity for each of these memories - goto page 4

4) Submodalities test page outline:

-Demonstrate concept in video

-Describe concept in text. Text contains user name and problem description

-Offer client buttons to select their current state

-Offer client buttons to select their optimal response

Submodalities to be tested in this order:

-Size

-Brightness

-Distance

-Transparent/Solid

-Associated

-Panoramic

-Still/Moving

The positive experience should be queried first through all of the submodalities, followed by the negative experience.

5) Data Gather Page 3 - Video description, question user for the level of intensity of their negative and positive experience and their belief in ability to change impact of memories

6) Data Gather Page 4 - Ask if they are willing to do an e-mail follow up and get e-mail address.

7) e-mail follow up sent one week later Data Gather Page 5 - question user for the level of intensity of their negative and positive experience and their belief in ability to change impact of memories.

QUESTION SW: Do we need more e-mail follow up to make conclusions about long term impact? Say 3 months, 6 months, even a year later? How will we statistically handle the lack of respondents to the e-mail follow-up, what’s our protocol for those who drop out in terms of not responding to the emails?

Data Analysts:

1) Positive and Negative Original Submodalities Histogram

2) Positive and Negative Submodalities of change Histogram

3) Belief in change delta from start to finish

4) Delta in Impact of positive and negative memory experience

5) Data points 1, 2, 3 and 4 by NLP Experience population

6) Average length of time spent on Web Page

7) Data points 1, 2, 3 and 4 by NLP Experience population with x time Standard Deviations removed

8) Positive and Negative Original Submodalities Histogram of those who experienced the greatest delta in change.

9) Positive and Negative Submodalities of change Histogram of those who experienced the greatest delta in change.

10) Long term effect of modifying the memory. Delta from e-mail survey from post experiment survey
